Many parents like to praise their children. Some praise their children for their intelligence while others praise them for their effort. Which is better? Researchers at Columbia University carried out a survey.
They conducted six studies on grade 5 with students aged from 10 to 12, comparing the goals and achievements of children praised for their intelligence and those for making an effort.
In the studies, the children were given an exam with several different problems to solve. All the children were told that they did very well on the test, no matter how well they actually did. Some were given statements like, “You must be smart to have worked out these problems, ” while others were told, “You must have worked hard at them. ” Then they were given more problems, but this time they were all told that they did not do as well on the second set.
The children who were praised for their effort attributed their low scores to a lack of effort, while those who were praised for their intelligence said a lack of ability was to blame.

习作
Praise children for their effort or intelligence?
A survey has been conducted on what parents should praise children. Different praises have different effort on children.
In my own opinion, praising children for their effort is a better choice. When a child did something well, he would like others to praise him for his perfect work as well as his hard working, especially for those who is not good at study.
My little cousin, for example, who is still learning in a kindergarten, likes playing up-side-down. Though he doesn’t do it very well, he goes on playing it. Why? Just because his parents always praise him, like “You’re quite good at it!” “How hard it is! You must have worked so hard for it!”
Praising for their effort confirms their work. It will encourage them to try the same thing again and again. No matter how difficult it is, children will try their best to gain more praises from you.
On the contrary, praising for their intelligence will decrease their patience when once they meet failure. They won’t go on after a few tries.
In a word, to praise children for their effort is much better than to praise them for their intelligence.
1. A survey has been conducted on what parents should praise their children for .
2. Different praises have different effort on children.
3. On the contrary, praising for their intelligence will decrease their patience when once they meet failure. 此处when once they meet failure "when once "有重复之嫌,去掉一个更好。这句话也应算是后面一句话(主句)的时间状语从句,这样改:“ When once they meet failure, they won’t go on after a few tries.
In my own opinion / Though / No matter how difficult it is / On the contrary / In a word / to praise him for his perfect work as well as his hard working, especially for those who is not good at study...
